Legend of Barbegazi - The Frosty Mountain Guardians of the Alps

Barbegazi, a gnome species deeply rooted in Swiss and French folklore, inhabit the lofty realms of the mountainous border between France and Switzerland, namely the Alps. Their dwellings are believed to be intricate networks of caves and tunnels discreetly accessed near the mountain peaks.

The name "Barbegazi" is thought to stem from the corruption of "barbes glacées," meaning 'frozen beards.'

Thriving exclusively in the frigid climates found at the summits of mountains, Barbegazi engage in a seasonal rhythm, hibernating during the summer months and emerging into activity during the winter, particularly during blizzards. Many legends suggest their fondness for riding avalanches, showcasing their agility in both burying themselves swiftly in thick snow and skillfully digging their way out, regardless of the snow's depth.

Renowned for their unique role as guardians, Barbegazi are known to provide warnings to humans about potential hazards. They emit distinctive sounds, including whistling noises akin to marmots or eerie hooting, often mistaken for gusts of wind, alerting hikers to the looming threat of avalanches. Additionally, they display benevolence by attempting to rescue individuals trapped by snowfall or guiding lost sheep back to their owners. Despite these commendable actions, the true nature of their attitudes towards humans remains ambiguous.

Preferring the high-altitude expanses of mountain peaks, Barbegazi share a resemblance to typical gnomes, distinguished by their disproportionately large feet. Their hair and beards, resembling thick icicle growths, contribute to their distinctive appearance. However, upon closer inspection, when the icicle growths melt, revealing normal hair underneath, and their oversized feet double as skis or snowshoes, facilitating unhindered travel across the snowy mountains. Descriptions depict them as covered in white fur, akin to a modern jumpsuit.

Notably, Barbegazi sightings have never been documented in temperatures above zero degrees Celsius, and no reports exist below the tree line. While mountaineers claim to have captured these elusive creatures during their ventures, none have survived beyond a few hours when removed from their natural, frigid habitat.
