if teachers are so needed, pay them more and prioritize them. don't just demand things from them without helping and giving them according to the merit of their work.

Im a custodian at an elementary school. Kids are dirty as Hell. The staff tries to make it safe but kids just really dont care about being safe. Its a tough topic.

Teachers are literally the backbone of society and people treat them like the appendix. Better treatment for teachers=better education for children+higher success in schools

Tbh most of these disgruntled parents are just ones that are just tired of taking care of their kids, like let's be honest about it. Parents who do care about their kids health and their own and are empathetic towards teachers and other families aren't that upset by it. Quick getting mad because you have to take care of YOUR kid. Don't have them if you don't want to take care of them 🙄

To any teachers in the comments:
I am a mom of 3 kids, I've been having to navigate online school with them since March or April 2020 (it's been like 20 years since then, so it's a little hard to remember exact dates). It's been hard and frustrating at times. I have felt like a complete failure more than once. I've had to continually remind myself that it's good I'm a stay at home Mom and am capable of staying with my kids 24/7. It has been hard, but I'm sure it's a million times harder for you. So to teachers who don't want to be in school and would rather, or are forced to, do online class: THANK YOU. Thank you for giving my kids a place to go when I was so uncomfortable with them heading back in to schools. Thank you for adjusting to these weird times. My kids are in elementary school so I set them up where I can see them the full school day to keep them on task, I see how hard it is to keep a class of 1st graders focused when they're staring at a screen at home. You guys absolutely rock, being a teacher was already a hard and underappreciated, and now you guys are rocking it when in a pandemic.

If teachers are this vital, should they have been paid more in the first place?

As a sophomore in high school, I know that my teachers are not perfect, but they certainly try their best to teach as well as possible and still make class somewhat enjoyable. So all of this hate towards teachers is completely unjustifiable. Students and teachers are basically feeling the same type of pain, except the teachers are the ones trying their best to make sure we all succeed.

"Teachers should quit if they feel unsafe" reminds me of a story where the teachers in one school did exactly that and the school ended up not having enough teachers and staff to reopen at all. So, mission accomplished?

As a teacher who went back in person since October, I've been risking my life every day. I love being in the classroom but, I can see the terrible contact tracing. I have had kids in my class who tested positive for COVID, I wasn't told until the students told me why he had been absent for 2 days. WTF? I'm a high risk person and was not notified that a student who tested positive was in my classroom for an hour every day it's upsetting. We've had kids get sent home to quarantine and the parents still dropping them off at school the next day. Kids won't listen to keep their masks on at all times, they're touching ach other in the hallways all the time. If normally schools still couldn't manage to get kids to not wear ripped jeans, you think they're really going to follow protocols of social distancing and wearing masks properly? On the note of if you don't want to go to work quit, my school has lost about 12 teachers so far this year, every day more of us ponder that exact option because we feel underappreciated and overworked. We now have to write reports on every single student every week, every time a student doesn't attend class for 3 days in a row we have to call home, we have to call failing student's parents every week, offer them a chance to turn work in 6 weeks late and grade it on time for reportcards, attend meetings, digitalize all our work, take attendance 3 times a day per class period, check our email 3 times a day, talk all day long with a mask on. This year is honestly exhausting and we're not getting paid anything extra for all the days and nights we spend working on our lessons and classwork that we realistically can't get done in time. Not to mention dealing with technology issues because our schools are not built for online schooling. Side note, being in person doesn't mean the kids will get to socialize like before and learn more. We have to teach at our computer and the kids in the classroom are staring at their own computers, not much different. I'd like some of these people complaining to try and do what we do every day! On top of all that, personally I don't own a car so I have to go to work by bus, but due to the pandemic the public transportation has been impacted. I can't afford to uber every day, I can't drive due to medical conditions, I'm also putting myself and my school at risk by going to work and going home. But the district said buck up and do it or find another way to support yourself and your family. This situation sucks, I understand parents and kids are frustrated, we teachers are too, we know the kids are not learning but we're doing our best. Every time I see people trash talking teachers like we're lazy and don't want to go up to the school in person it irks me to my core, doctors chose to put themselves in that position of risking their lives, we didn't sign off on that in our teaching contract. I wasn't given a choice but I'm glad some teachers were. My school already lost 1 teacher due to COVID, I've lost 1 aunt, 2 uncles and a cousin is fighting for his life on a respirator, my family has me as head of household, I can't afford to get sick but also can't afford to lose my job...

My mom is high risk, if I went to school and caught the virus and gave it to her and she died I would loose my mind.

Parents flat out refusing to have their kids wear masks are typically the same ones shouting at the teachers to reopen the classroom.

The reality is that the parents that are losing their shit over this (the guy at 4:36 looked just about ready to murder) really just don't want to have to deal with their children all day.

I'm a teacher and online instruction sucks. I really, really would like students to be back in school, but it should be done safely. It's really disheartening to see so many public attacks on teachers who just want to work without the risk of getting infected or infecting their family members. We are not the enemy.

"I need a break from my mom" the real reason parents want schools open

I don’t understand why y’all are complaining. This has been the best school year ever; no bullies, no listening to my generation being the idiots that they are, and most importantly no social interaction whatsoever. I can’t wait to be a senior next year, I hope it’s the same as this year.

I appreciate that schools are closed. I missed the final year of high school and my freshman year of college, but at least I'm not constantly worrying about catching the virus and passing it to my parents. I'm a lot less stressed than I would be constantly worrying about passing the virus.

Why is everyone blaming teachers?? It's bad enough they get terrible pay as it is.

Honestly, America treats their teachers horribly even before the pandemic.

Schools aren't closed, teachers are still planning and teaching, the buildings are closed. Buildings aren't schools, education can happen in such buildings, but this notion that schools are closed is a misnomer.

I want schools to open. However teachers need to be payed more. Getting paid minimum wage is not livable. Just here in Kentucky the last governor wanted to take away their pensions. Keep in mind, in theory the low pay would be counter balanced by a good pension, but that's isn't the case
