WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:
Despite common opinion, the Netherlands has not always been a paradise of cycling and sustainable mobility. Until the early 1970’s many Dutch streets resembled those in North America and elsewhere, with increasing vehicle congestion and declining safety for all users. It was the combination of growing advocacy and protest, along with events like the OPEC oil crisis that launched the Netherlands along a path to creating safer, more cycling friendly streets. The inception of Sustainable Safety helped launch concepts and principles for designing these safer spaces, but with ever-evolving mobility options sharing the existing space, a new approach was needed. In comes The Good Street: A new approach to rebalancing place and mobility.

In this first of three sessions, Melissa and Stephen explore the history that has brought us to this point, and introduce why a new approach was developed. Including a brief look at some of the historic events that impacted the trajectory of street design in the Netherlands, and an introduction into concepts like vehicle families and kinetic energy relationships, this session will give you a good foundation for The Good Street that will be built upon in practice in future sessions.

This presentation is part of an ongoing series of digital webinars provided by our interdisciplinary team of experts in The Netherlands and North America.
