At night, these workers began their day. They are tasked with delivering these boxes of noodles or other types of food and liquids to the top of the mountain. Most of them are in their 50s and 60s and have been doing this job for a long time. It's very hard but they have bills to pay.
One woman said that she already spent $200 that day for her medicine. The hard job has taken a toll on her body. Seeing this, the kind tourist offered to help her but she said that he can't do it because it's too heavy. She was right. It takes a lot of training to be able to do what she does.
Normal people cannot climb the mountain while carrying so many heavy boxes and do it everyday multiple times a day. In order to avoid tourists and give them a better experience, most of these workers work at night rather than in the morning. At night it's cold and there is often snow and ice on the steep steps.
The man decided to accompany her up the mountain afraid that she would fall. She had to take a break every 5 minutes. When they are finally done and descending the mountain the woman pulled out her phone and began smiling at videos of her granddaughter.
She invited the man to her home where her husband was already waiting having finished his shift already. She showed the man all the bruises on her legs and there were indeed many. Even her husband never get used to the sight and fell silent.
The kind man gave her the hiking socks he bought for himself, unopened. And the woman gratefully accepted.
They prepared noodles for him and there while he ate, he realized that every cup of noodles he had on the top of the mountain as a kid and now as an adult were results of the labor of hard working people like this couple. And they don't get compensate enough for it. It makes him that much more grateful. It's hard because these people don't have pension and when their bodies can't take it anymore, they have to rely on savings. Thankfully some have families who could help out when that day comes but for some it's something they never think too much about and just focus on getting that day's work done.
