As a business owner I love a cover letter or at least a few sentences at the top/bottom of a resume to tell me (specifically) why you are interested in a part time medical receptionist position. It helps me pick through ones that are “settling” for PT when they really want FT.

I've been taught to not claim to have the required skills, but name an situation or task from previous experience where that skill was developed or exhibited, providing evidence, so to speak. Was that just me? Now when I receive applications, it really grinds my gears to read so many unfounded claims. Anyone can write "I'm analytical, hardworking and dedicated.", it tells me nothing about the candidate.

Do you need a cover letter? I recruit and if i do get 1 I dont read it. I never understood the purpose. I got the resume with the job, dates and description. Why I need the cover letter.
