Dividend Dates Explained (QUICKLY and EASILY)

The different dividend dates can be really confusing, so we offer up a simple and clear ‘Dividend Dates Explained’ video. Following up the ‘Stock Dividends Explained’ piece, this is a natural continuation. When it comes to dividends in finance or dividends and stocks, there are some important dates that you want to make sure you understand. In chronological order, those dates are the dividend declaration date (or dividend announcement date - same thing), the ex-dividend date, the dividend record date, and the dividend payment date.

Of these, the ex-dividend date is by far and away the most important, so we spend extra time laying out an ex-dividend date definition to ensure that the ex-dividend date is explained thoroughly for everyone watching. These two videos taken together can give every novice investor a nice foundation of knowledge for their dividend investing strategy.

Is there any benefit to collecting a dividend? Doesn't the stock price get lowered by the amount of the dividend? In that case, I don't see the point of wanting to own a dividend paying stock.
