Bullet Train is a new big-budget ensemble action movie starring Brad Pitt along with other big Avengers-level actors, directed by the co-director of John Wick. And despite being in danger of becoming just another John Wick clone, Bullet Train manages to stand on its own two legs, in terms of characters and story and action. So in today's Film Perfection, let's look at some of the ways it does that. Here's a couple ways to make more of your action movie.

I bought a new mic and I'm figuring it out. Let me know any feedback for how to improve! And thanks for watching!

I love how tangerine actually listens to his brother when he rambles about Thomas, otherwise he wouldn’t have known the significance of the diesel sticker on the prince.

One understated joke, that gets missed out: Ladybug is covering for Carver... who is portrayed by Ryan Reynolds. Meaning this is what you expect from a Ryan Reynolds film, but Brad Pitt is filling in for him.

This movie isn't talked enough. It is 2 hours of pure enjoyment and empty action. Its is a movie, its to entertain, and it definitely nail it

By far the best thing about this movie is its commitment to Chekhov's gun. Every detail is somehow relevant to the action and it makes sure to keep it on your mind so the viewer is left wondering how it'll come into play.

I don’t get why critics hated on this movie so much

It wasn’t the deepest movie out there. But it was written well enough to be actually engaging for more than just action and comedy and overall just was really fun

One of the most fun movies I've seen all year. A total blast from start to finish. I'm surprised critics were split on this one.

The film felt like a bunch of action characters from different movies converging into a winner takes all setting.

One thing I noticed about this movie is that its a lot like The Quick and the Dead; You have a ton of characters whose only purpose is to die during a set piece but they're introduced so strongly that they're instantly memorable and you end up wanting to know more about em.

So many examples of Ladybugs bad luck actually helping him, and him still attributing it to bad luck. Wonderfully tied into the theme of fate.

I remember just seeing the trailer for this was insane, you can tell they really wanted to make it unique and weird

The running gag with Thomas had me rolling every time it was brought up, *especially* the joke when Lemon tells Logan Lerman’s character he’s ‘More of a Percy.’

I laughed hard at the Thomas & Friends references. As a kid growing up watching the show, it brings a massive smile to my face.

This was genuinely one of those movies that had me laughing all the way through while also having me on the edge of my seat. There were so many Chekhov's Guns that paid off in the most unexpected yet best possible ways.

The costume design also plays a big role in helping all of them feel distinctive from each other. Even Lemon and Tangerine, who could arguably be counted as “one” player in the overall situation (e.g. they share their onscreen name moment, when all the others get one each), the way they dress is very distinctive from each other, Tangerine being the smarter and more meticulous of the two while Lemon is more casual, fitting their respective personalities. And there’s a whole load of little details that reiterate this, like the moment at 12:56, where Tangerine takes care to carefully fold his coat out of the way and Lemon just chucks his across the isle onto a seat.

And you can tell they both take pride in their respective appearances too. There’s a _ton_ of little moments like Lemon refusing to button up his jacket to hide the blood stains because he wants people to see his new tie, and Tangerine fixing himself up in mirrors or brushing stuff off his suit (like at 12:56), or my personal favourite, when Lemon fixes his brother’s tie for him while they’re trying to figure things out. I really love these two. Absolutely _bags_ of character.

Someone managed to pull an emotional moment out of Lemon and Tangerine with their origins and bond. Bullet train had me in tears somehow

My favourite characters in Bullet Train is Lemon and Tangerine. I love how Lemon’s obsession with Thomas The Tank Engine is used as a major plot point, it’s hilarious

The characters' quirks are what I loved about this movie, along with how they played into the kind of characters the actors usually play. We've all seen Brad Pitt play an action hero. But did we see him be really into self-help and wear a silly hat?
Hiroyuki Sanada plays the same dignified, katana-wielding badass he's been typecast as since the Last Samurai, but the Elder is also kind, fond of silly metaphors and he's really into flower arrangement.
