During the seven-day heat wave in Portland, a huge branch of an oak tree broke and fell in the Eastmoreland neighborhood, taking down powerlines with it. It looks like the heat may have caused the tree to explode.

It can be even worse after a long dry spell if there's a hard rain. The tree becomes more brittle without water, and as it absorbs the rain it gets heavier and parts can break off. A 12-foot oak limb broke off a 40-foot tree and landed within six inches of my new car in 2000 after two weeks of hot dry weather followed by an all-day rain.

Let's hope the city pays for the property damage.

100 degrees isn't a heat wave..these trees are not exploding because it's 100 degrees 😑

The global warning people will say anything. Who ever heard of a tree exploding because it is HOT. In Texas we would have had all kinds of explosions. It has been over 100 degrees most of July. Could there be some worms around? The conclusion sounds hilarious.
