BABY Alligator Calls for Mom!

When we collected Crystal's eggs a few weeks ago, we only found five eggs when she normally lays around 40. We weren't sure what happened. Evidently Crystal tried to fake us out and made a 2nd nest somewhere else in the habitat. Today I watched her crawl out of the pond, grab a baby in her mouth, come back to the water and release it to swim freely out of her mouth- some National Geographic stuff right in front of me. One of the coolest things I've seen in all my years working with animals.

I worked at an animal rescue center and one of the herpatology heads had gotten a six foot gator so attached to her, he would make this noise whenever he saw her. She could also put him in her lap and rub his back down with a towel. He loved it and often would fall asleep IN HER LAP!😂

Also fun fact about Alligators, that call not only calls mama but also ANY female alligator within earshot, who will instinctively protect the babies even if they’re not theirs. So unless this is a controlled situation and this gator is a rescue or something, and you just picked up a random baby alligator, put the child down and RUN

They're so cute for the first 5 years or so. Basically when they're small and can be called mostly harmless. Main danger of just seeing a baby in the wild: mom is around
Babies start making their call for mom : there's the danger and you don't quite know where she's coming from.
