I think I hold the flute wrong becouse I experience big pain in the left hand muscles between my thumb and index finger, especially when playing a1 b1 c2 notes. Any advice?

I have a problem with my left index finger . I always use its joint ( where the finger is separated from the hand ) to hold the flute and I've noticed that my index finger looks bent in a bad way . If I don't use it to tolerate the flute's weight, the flute will fall down . I don't know what to do ! ( sorry for my terrible English )
