- when the -ve sign is given to variable (x) in the function this causes the graph to invert 180 degrees towards the -ve x-axis (in quadrant 2)

- when the -ve sign is given to the radical (the root as a whole or the function as a whole, where f(x)=y) this causes the graph to invert 180 degrees towards the -ve y-axis (towards the 4th quadrant)

- when both happens this causes both inversions to occur to the graph (ie: inverted to the left and down "in the 3rd quadrant")
