When you revisit Bionicle as an adult and can fully appreciate the well planned out plot twist of Mata Nui, the god like figure that drove the series storyline for so many years, being a colossal sized robot and hero and villains alike serving as the microscopic nanomachines within.

And the island named after the big guy himself?

Just a mask to obscure Mata Nui's face while asleep fitting in with the theme of masks from Day 1 of Bionicle's 10 year run!

I honestly believe Mata Nui's Rising is the greatest plot reveal in media history. The amounts of hints and nudges they dropped over the years were staggering and seeing it finally to light is such an eye opener.

I remember, back when I was in elementary school, my friend and I were theorizing what Mata Nui would look like if he were ever released as a set. We figured that he would end up being a combiner set, where you would combine parts from every set ever released up to that point, and that would be what his body looked like. Seeing as how the Great Spirit Robot is literally made of/populated by every bionicle ever, we weren't that far off.

What I find numerous is that he launched the Ignika away but that is the safety mechanism in case the Great spirit robot is in danger of dying (meaning makuta now) so him launching it away is relying on a lot of things going right inside the Matoran universe

I gotta say, back in 2008 this really was viewed as a huge deal in the Bionicle franchise, it had all built up to this. With Mata Nui finally being reawakened, it seemed like the Toa had finally completed their mission and won, only for Mata Nui’s giant robotic body to be suddenly taken over and controlled by Makuta Teridax, and seeing The Mask of Life flying off into the galaxy. It made it seem like for the first time in the original Bionicle series, we had no idea what was going to happen next.

Fun fuct:in 2002 the story was that Makuta send a message to bhoroks for them to wake up too early but it was supposed to be that toa mata were to do something accidently under mata nui and then a Giant hand would appear out of the ocean and from that hand bhoroks would come out but they scraped that becuse it woudn't be such a suprise that Giant robot exists
