I'm not joking when I say I've been trying to work out how speakers are connected to each other/amps/subs etc for 3 days without things making a whole lot of sense, and this one video has me understanding everything to do with subs perfectly. Much appreciated!

This might have been a simple video for you to make but I have been trying to understand this concept for a very long time. Thank you so much for all of your videos and knowledge you are a blessing to the average High fi enthusiast !!! And BTW to all fans reading this Randy is just as cool in person . I met him at axpona and he took a photo with me without any hesitation. Super cool bro 😎

Ok, I try that with my cheap ass Mohr subwoofer ... the settings etc. ... I may later change to a Polk matching the new fronts and rears ...

... finally some understandable instructions.

I am still running my Hsu subs. They aren't the fanciest. They aren't the most expensive; they aren't the cheapest. But they have been making me happy for a long time now.

Hi Randy,

I love your videos very much. Do you know why? You bring me back to my teenage years (I am 44 now), because you are exactly like my high school German teacher, Herr Geiger. You eyes, your beard, your hair, your wrinkles, the style how you speak, your gestures, everything exactly like him used to be 25 - 30 years ago. In this video you even you are teaching me. Magical. :)

Good video! A couple of points:
1. Line level is the unamplified preamp level. Use RCA jacks or balanced connections, if you have them on your equipment.
2. You can use a y-connector on your preamp output if you have powered speakers. Run one leg to the main and one to the line input on the sub. It won't provide high pass filtration to the powered speaker, but you can definitely run a sub.
3. Some audio guys like using the speaker level (powered signal) even better than the preamp level signal They claim it helps match the sound signature better.
4. Many people use a sub as an add on to the main speaker when it is for music. In that case. No hp filter on the mains.
5. If you wire in a capacitor to block hi frequencies on the mains, try to use a decent one. Electrolytic types do have bad toleancing and the tend to store the energy longer and smear details a bit. If using 100 speakers, don't sweat it.

Came across this while trying to figure out how to mod in a subwoofer out on a Bose speaker pair with integrated power. While this didn't solve the problem, it did give me some ideas on how to pull it off and how to isolate the bass response on the speakers themselves. Thanks!

Very informative! Great info on not only adding a sub, but also what to look for in a sub for your particular situation. Your reviews are awesome! I'd love to see you do a budget streamer shoot out, or for the budget home theater guy "how to live without a center channel" or "budget home theater without a center channel" or "cutting ties with your center channel", and also "budget-minded upgrade your speaker cables/RCA's/ subwoofer cable/ etc." Excited for the sub $300 speaker

You just saved me a lot of money on the headphone amplifiers I was thinking about buying because some had "sub-outs".

By the way, I love the cheesy 70's game show music.

Randy, another option to the 'inline' capacitor high pass filter is to put a higher power resistor in parallel with the capacitor. This will be kinder to your amplifier at low frequencies. For example if your speaker is 8 ohms, and you want 50% less bass, you will put an 8 ohm 50 watt resistor in parallel with the capacitor you're using.

Good video dude / tutorial! Well done, like lamends terms style. You've definitely conveyed it in a non-intimidating manner. I'm all about lending ones experience in such a way to make it easier for the unfamiliar to receive without all the pretense / intimidation / elitist factors. After all, at the end of the day, its really all about the love of listening to / enjoying music & all the feely/feels that ensue. Well done, again, Sir!

Thanks for the info. I learned more from you in 5 minutes than the store sales staff at Best Buy could do in the same amount of time.
