Hume's famous discussion of miracles is actually still used in the philosophy of religion today.

Your videos are fantastic - I use them to teach my undergraduate course in Philosophical ethics!

This has taught me more in 5 minutes than my tutor did in 2 hours!

Hume, one of my favourite British/Scottish philosophers of all time. Always the brilliant skeptic, including the weird ending of the Dialogues. "I realize I'm winning this debate too well, I better leave, before the religious authorities realize I'm an atheist. So how about you pick the winner, random student." Other than that weird moment, he was a great example of intellectual honesty (I don't even know if that can be counted against, since many of us would do the same).

Thanks to Your videos I'm looking people of YouTube from a more positive side.
Never before have I seen so many decent, polite arguments where people actually speak their mind, listen to the other side and form their counter arguments accordingly with dignity. I'm amazed.
And I find the videos quite interesting also, though that might not be very objective cause I have tendency to like philosophy.
Oh and the the way You present it all works very well also.
Well done

I couldn't find my professor's Hume notes in his mess of a canvas page, you totally saved my assignment that's due tomorrow. Thank you so much!

But even Hume had proposed the idea that simply because something has happened, and continues to happen as it has, does not necessitate that it WILL continue to happen as it always had happened.

Just come accross Hume in my theological studies. So thank you for the video and looks like a great channel. As for miracles, I decided to be open minded as I can't prove either way about the original, biblical miracles.

You probably know by now, as I am commenting on this video more than a year after it was made, but as an American and a student in US government, I can't let it go without commenting that as Americans we definitely do vote for senators through direct election, you were precisely right, it was in the 17th amendment. I'm not sure what Andrew Ritchie was on about

"A violation of the normal laws of nature by some supernatural agent."
My problem with miracles are their definition (or Hume's definition, at least). What's supernatural, other than systems in nature that we have yet to define? If some one claims to have seen a miracle, they're -- at least in my opinion -- referring to a violation of their understanding of the normal laws of nature.

What Hume fail to see is that whatever create the observed uniformity of natural laws, must necessarily brake this same uniformity in order to create it. The first cause of everything must necessarily and logically be unique and unrepeatable and, most important of all, outside this same natural law, at least as observed now. Therefore the observed uniformity of natural law must necessarily presuppose that it can be broken.

You should make Decartes because you've already done some videos about Kant, Berkeley and Hume so it would be nice to have this historical coherence about empirism/rationalism, maybe you could even make a playlist about it.

Hume’s argument against miracles is invalid. Natural laws are statements of natural regularities. If an event violates a law of nature then that merely indicates that what we had thought was a natural law was, in fact, not one. In other words whatever happens Hume will just move the goalposts and declare it was natural and not miraculous.

I appreciate all of your videos, some of them really do help me with my exams

Descartes sounds great for the next episode. Awesome episode on Hume. I would agree with him. No one currently seems to have sufficient evidence.

Can you clarify the point that "the possibility of each not happening was even more crazy than the possibility that it did" ?

First of all, great channel! It's exactly this recourse to alternative explanations that bothers me. For every miraculous event, you can always refer to a cause B rather than some presupposed cause A. Now add the possibility of an yet undiscovered natural law or a set of laws that can adequately account for the event and it gets quite messy.
