Rengoku and tanj's tsuba is put on the sword based on the flame going the same direction as there slashes.... Rengoku slashes up with flames and tanj slashes down with the rays of the sun....

A period in Japanese history had their swords positioned like this. I recommend looking into a batto jutsu video. Samurai used to have it like that for it to be more easy on the attack when you pull it out. The blade is facing you so you go up from non dominant to dominant. When its over your head, flick the wrist, turn the blade the other way and slash downwards diagonally towards the scabbard on your non dominant side.
Edit: it can also be used for forward slashes, this is just one example.
