I saw these guys right around this same time in Vancouver BC at a club called Oil Can Harry's. I sat right in the front row just below Pat Metheny. They had two bass players that night with Eberhard Weber being the other bassist. Steve Swallow really blew me away with his solos, he was a lead bass player and Weber just of filled out the sound with his floating sound. It was a great show.

I had a chance to see this group multiple times in Boston in 1976 at the Jazz Workshop, a small club in the city. It was my first time to see Burton, but I saw him many times over the 3 years I was there in Boston. I also got to see Metheny and his Bright Sized Life band, Jaco was truly amazing.

Pat is my all time favorite guitar player. Nobody phrases like him. Gary Burton somehow never hits a bad note. Dan gotleib of course goes on to be PMG's drummer for many years. Swallow never gets much credit but should. The combo of a pick and a short scale hollowbody bass was unheard of in jazz at the time! Truly a trail blazer. And they play 2 Carla Bley tunes, swallow's wife BTW. Great stuff thanks

This is like the blueprint for Steps Ahead, also some Zappa like elements in here too... Pat really did have it all together even back then.

Gary Burton has always been one of my favourite musicians, since I heard his record with Keith Jarrett, from 1970-1971, and then The New Quartet from 1973, both fantastic records. Of course, being quite young at the time, I first heard those records a few years later, it would be around the time this recording took place, 1976, when I had turned 15. I also got the Ring album, with Pat and Eberhard Weber, however I didn't like that as much. Too intellectual for me at the time, I think. But this concert is more direct and outgoing in nature. Gary really could swing his ass of if he wanted - one of the great geniuses of modern jazz! I thoroughly enjoyed reading his autobiography a couple of years ago.
Thanks for uploading this, wherever you got this from, and of course thanks to NRK for having the insight and policy to document important artistic happenings; that is so rare today, even for public service companies.

Tremendous! Four of my favorite ECM musicians. Burton is amazing. The rest of them just getting going. Plus playing Carla Bley tunes. Another favorite of mine.

This is fantastic! And totally amazing that the quality is this good given the primitiveness of audio/video tech back then. I know, I was around then and playing music myself. My video (click my pic) came five years later and its quality isn't nearly this good.

I think this is the oldest video where I’ve seen a Peavey amp (in this case, a cabinet)

There’s a guy who has gotten hair transplants from Pat. He woke up after the operation with a full head of hair and super human guitar agility.

Is that a bridge pickup in that ES-175? This is a *very* early video.
