In 2023, the most popular sports video game franchise in the world had to change its name. FIFA, as it was known, became EA FC.

What began simply as a negotiating position in a licensing dispute, turned into one of the costliest decisions in the history of football.

James Montague explains, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

Moral of the video.

Seeing EA as the less greedy company is mind boggling. 😂

That FIFA thought they were going to out-greed EA is absolutely wild

when EA are the good guys in a story, this is truly a messed up situation we are in.

It's very rare when EA is lesser of the two evils

It's not only about greediness, FIFA overestimated the importance of its name.

EA and FIFA deserve each other

3:25 "Creative, innovative and experimental". That's a fraudulent thing said by EA. It's like Jessi Lingard saying he's better than Messi and Ronaldo.

the best part is that if FIFA had asked for a 5 or 10% increase on their existing deal, EA would have probably accepted

I disagree with the statement that says the difference between PES and FIFA came in 2008.
Maybe from a statistical point of view, but PES was still strong up until 2014, with the terrible PES 2014, and the FOX Engine games killed the saga. The EFootball rebrand is just the coffin for the belated PES

Meanwhile, Football Manager goes on silently as the best of them all.

Football Manager is where the good stuff is at. FIFA turned to garbage ever since they added cards and made it into a gambling app rather than a fun football game it was before

EA vs FIFA is like the Wrestlemania main event to determine who's the biggest greedy bustard😂

Infantino is a pure politician he just says things to please. Things that aren't practical at all, look at the nonsense he done with the world cup 42 teams honestly. The world cup is a free for all as for EA well....

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall as Gianni Infantino found out that games can't be made in a few months.

Also the complete indifference of fans to the lack of a FIFA logo must sting a little too.

One keep point that was glossed over is that EA has a monopoly over the licensing. So even if FIFA were to release a new competing football game, it would still face all the issues that the PES series had.

As long as they have licensing deals with the leagues and UEFA why would it matter to have FIFA in the name.

As a novice game developer FIFA severely underestimated what it takes to make a video game

"We need a level of freedom to be truly creative, innovative, and experiment in the market place." - The guy who manages the company who's known for repackaging the same games year after year with the only real innovations being new ways to turn a game into a pay to play scenario.
