He is not only one of America's hottest rising directors... he is one of the busiest. From Shotgun Stories to Take Shelter to Mud to Midnight Special to Loving, Nichols makes the kinds of movies that people say they don't make anymore. This is his most recent conversation with David Poland

Shot in Los Angeles, November 2016

One of the most riveting and compelling directors of his generation. It's great to have him talk freely for 40 minutes, the way he manages to take you through his process with a smooth and detailed argumentation makes you learn so much about cinema. And yes, we the french love deeply your movies.

I love how subtle Jeff was in showing the personal life and not big crowd pleasing moments. He's 5 for 5 in my book. He seems like a great guy.

A real nice guy, honest, thoughtful, open. It shows in his films, all very very good.
I just saw "Midnight Special" the other night, and it was one of the best SF movies I saw in a long time. A must-follow director.

I adore Loving. It's one of the best of the decade imo.

Both Take Shelter and Mud are excellent as well. He's such a talented director. He really brings the best out of his actors.

Take Shelter is the best Jeff's film to date. I've seen Loving, it's very good - I will recommend it to everyone. But Take Shelter left so much more impression on me. Jessica Chastain shines as an actor in a supporting role (Jeff's lucky that way - Ruth Negga in Loving is also a very talented actress). Sometimes a film with a small budget and unknown (then) actors can become a film to be remembered. I feel the same about Donnie Darko

Keep it up Jeff. You will get that broad recognition you deserve one day, whether it's a couple Oscars or $$$

About the need to have conversations as a country, 39:00, what gets people out of their houses is usually life's basic necessities. If the unelected federal forces are involved, it is only an one-way conversation.

40 Days for a film like Loving feels almost excessive. Hacksaw Ridge was filmed in 59.
Great director though.
