A popular Chinese mobile app has sparked controversy over concerns of inappropriate use of personal information. The AI app, called ZAO, has gone viral after its debut last week, topping the Apple app store downloads in the entertainment category in China on September 1. Earlier this week, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology asked the company about user issues and said it should be regulated. Privacy concerns over apps are not new.
