I did not know this about Gomer and Goober; it’s quite sad because not only did Andy and aunt Bea not get along, now I learned that Gomer and Goober didn’t get along either. That sort of is contrary to what we like to think
of the Andy Griffith show and Mayberry itself ;
as that everyone loving everyone everyone helping everyone everyone getting along ;
everything flowers and rainbows, and disappointing when we learned that it’s just not that way. But life is as it is,
And I’m grateful that the characters could be portrayed as well as they did,
because no one would’ve had an idea they didn’t like one another.

I liked both characters in the show. Can’t imagine Gomer portrayed by anyone else, but Jim Neighbors.
Same thinking for Goober.
Thinking of all the funny episodes with Gomer, he was a classic comic

If you see some of George Lindsey's excellent earlier work on Broadway and TV drama it shows how trash TV ate up and spat out many fine actors.

George really didn't do too bad after Mayberry RFD. He was a regular on Hee Haw and appeared in an episode of MASH. Of course he also returned as Goober in the Reunion show. I liked him best in a serious role on The Twilight Zone.

YT on PC requires download before video will play. That forces the Viewer to leave the original YT page so that recording a Like or Unlike is not likely -(requires more key clicks-time). It dilutes payment scheme. Smart TV's still stream and do not require download to play videos, so intentional?

I can understand his anger about losing out on the role. But it wasn't Jim Nabors' fault. Perhaps other actors got considered too. Gomer and Goober had similarities but were very different characters. It's hard to imagine George as Gomer, or Jim as Goober. One book said that after losing out on Gomer, George got offered the role of Dud Wash. It's a good thing he said no. Ironically, he and Hoke Howell later did an episode of Gunsmoke.

Can you imagine Shirley Temple as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz??? Or Buddy "Jed Clampett" as the Tin Man??? Only respiratory issues kept him from the role. Someone should do a book on people who missed Iconic roles for what ever reason. Didn't happen. Great Vid. Can you imagine George as Gomer Pyle USMC???
