This lecture is was created for use in Thermodynamics for Mechanical Engineers at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

This lectures goes through open system 1st law examples for a pump and for heat exchangers. We’ll see how to get specific symbolic equations for these systems by starting from the open version of the first law and making assumptions. Then, we’ll learn a new trick for how to solve the change in specific enthalpy (h) across a pump. We’ll also see how choosing different control volumes for a heat exchanger can allow us to solve for different parameters. Typically, we’ll analyze the entire heat exchanger to get a mass flow rate and either half of the heat exchanger to find a heat transfer rate.
