Very good review. It nicely highlights why this game has become a favorite for me and my friends.

The criticism is fair and I also feel that it doesn't get in the way of this game being amazing. Regarding the cheaper good cards I think the intent is to make early reveals more tempting so you will give up some actions to obtain them but can occasionally just luck into getting them.

Really fun to see you guys branch out into cardboard, would love to see more!
Saying Imperium has the best combat in a board game when OG Dune is right there on your shelf though? Oof!

Have never played that game, but could card imbalance be fixed by small stickers ? Did you try nerfing the spice master?

2-3 hours for a game? For my group it's usualy 45 minutes and never more than 60 minutes

Got Dune from a game bundle. Unfortunately I'm not enjoying it this much, it feels one of the worst board games I've ever played. Maybe because it doesn't support local multiplayer just online so I can't play it with friends. My favorite board game is Wingspan, especially the digital edition. You can play it up to 5 players, and you can fill the empty seats with AI players. In Wingspan I feel joy and accomplishment from simple stuff like when I put two birds down with one action or draw a cool card or lay a ton of eggs, or just get the food I need, it feels great. In 7 wonders even loosing is not a big deal because I've build a beautiful city and had a great time. But in Dune even buying the 9 cost sandworm card or winning a battle or winning the game is a meh feeling. I don't feel I'm doing anything meaningful or I accomplish anything. Maybe because the only permanent thing I can do is buying the 3rd agent or the council seat. Sure the cards I buy are also permanent but I need luck to use them, so it's not like I'm enjoying the benefit of them all the time, like I enjoy having a lot of permanent resources in 7 Wonders or a great card drawing or egg laying row in Wingspan.

I hate combat in ganes. But the reason i think it works here, is because it doesnt feel like combat, its really an area majority mini game each round that you commit resource to.
