Drastic change, like abandoning one's political beliefs (beliefs which people have come to entirely conflate with their essential 'self, ') _only_ happens when something affects the person on a personal level. Unfortunately, people need to be intelligent and observant enough to understand when something is affecting them, personally, before the impact can effect them, and the emotional propaganda is SO good at getting people to overlook those effects.
