Show Transcript April 30, 2020

Good morning students.
In the news, you may have heard that Gov. Newsom is considering how to reopen schools, possibly early, maybe July. How would that work?
Longer school year
Some online learning
Some social distancing (no assemblies)
Who will teach the extra time? What physical changes would be necessary to the school to make this possible?
What would you like to see change when school resumes?

Today’s lesson:
Reconstruction Plans: Radical Republican Plan
Radical Republicans were motivated by three main factors:
Revenge
Freedmen
Political Power
Radical Republicans motivated by
Revenge- a desire among some to punish the South for causing the war, so they would not rebel again. Maybe take away plantation land and divide it up among freedmen.
Concern for the freedmen- Some believed that the federal government had a role to play in the transition of freedmen from slavery to freedom.
Political Power concerns -Radicals wanted to keep the Republican Party in power in both the North and the South. Take power away from southern leaders. New leaders would be put in place, decided by the North.
Radical Republicans Plan:
Protective tariffs
tax paid on imports to give an advantage to US producers
Pro-business national banking system
Looking toward Westward expansion ...
Liberal land policies for settlers
Federal aid for railroad development
African Americans would be guaranteed
Equal rights to help begin their new lives as freedmen
Schools
Land
Right to vote
Full citizenship
Implementation - South would be divided into military zones to enforce this change.
Soldiers would make sure this plan happened.

Consider goals and obstacles. Reunite the country. Rebuild. Heal. How can we make that happen?
Remember the obstacles in our way:
Legacy of slavery is still a major factor
Question of punishment and prevention
HOW to rebuild this broken world

What do you think of the Radical Republican plan? Would it work? Would it work better than the other proposals we have considered?
Lincoln’s 10% plan
and Wade-Davis plan (response to Lincoln’s plan)
Andrew Johnson’s Plan
