Since its inception in 1945, the University of Rochester Department of Psychiatry has been at the forefront of psychiatric medicine and care. As part of UR Medicine, a world-class medical center and leading academic institution, our department has remained true to its mission to deliver outstanding patient-centered care, to conduct breakthrough research, and to train the next generation of mental health healthcare clinicians, researchers, and teachers.

The Department of Psychiatry at URMC is the birthplace of the Biopsychosocial Model. George Engel’s legacy continues today with a wide range of integrated clinical services and research programs that make our department unique. This is exemplified by several unique collaborative programs, including a robust system-wide faculty coaching program, mental health services embedded into a variety of specialized medical settings, and a pioneering primary care and hospitalist program for people with severe mental illnesses.
