One of the coolest professors I have ever had was for business statistics. We were to use the book that he wrote. On the first day of class, he told us not to buy the textbook and if we had, to return it to the bookstore. Over the semester, he would hand out photocopies of the chapters we would be covering, costing the students nothing for the text.

Entirely agree with Kirk re. TA's or other students correcting or grading one's papers etc. During my university days a professor, who was often tardy, decided to have the students position desks in a circle and pass their work on to the next student for correction and grading, to which I took umbrage. A kerfuffle ensued which included my sending an "inflammatory" letter to the Administration and my being summoned to defend my stance on the matter and I eagerly assented. As Kirk perspicaciously remarks: I'm paying big bucks for these classes and I expect the "expert/professor" to be, at the very least punctual, and do his job to the full measure of his ability.

She asks the question like she believes there is no such thing as a bad teacher... That is a sign of a bad teacher. First year university I had this pompous professor who made us buy her book and talked about how awesome it is. It was very simple. It was mostly photographs. She was a leftist but she was extremely contemptuous to the Africans in our class. It was my first foray into the hypocrisy of the left.

I agree. But one should remember that up until around 1970, most states allowed people to teach any class they had passed. Why do you need a college degree to teach fourth grade? Why do they force teachers to go back to college and pay for summer courses? All it seems to be for is to drive up the cost of education. And in 1970, we were still the best educated people in the world according to test scores. Now, after decades of teacher's union and college education for teachers, we're 45th. The teacher's union seems to be a purely political organization designed to hurt children and their parents, to enrich and empower the far left and allow the brainwashing of children and teachers, just like the USSR told us they were trying to do back in the 1950s. After all, if you own one college professor who has over 1000 students that he can manipulate, isn't that a lot cheaper for an enemy than recruiting, training, and equipping 1000 soldiers?
And yes, I have a friend who teaches high school music. She works 15 hours per week eight months per year and makes $72, 000 per year plus $6, 000 or more added to her retirement fund. Her husband was also a teacher who retired at age 53. And she complains that she isn't paid enough. And no, she really didn't need college.
Since 5th grade, most things that I learned which have been helpful or interesting, I learned mostly on my own. No one really needs college. It's just a way of sorting and controlling people. If you're genuinely interested in something, chances are you'll know more about it at age 24 than an average dramatically overpaid college professor.

some things need more consideration bur this doesn't mean that it's all wrong. For example a teacher assistant might be ok in certain situations. The point is that its not being questioned. That's where the whole polar divide fails people. Critical thinking and asking questions should be paramount and over the last half a century society has slowly been subverted into thinking backwards.
