LSB is only used on 2m if you want to operate satellites...That's why it was an option for some markets....The standard versions of the TR-9000 has both USB and LSB capabilities...

Thanks for the update! ❤3:45 10.7 Mhz crystals are quite common. The frequency can be shifted down a few kHz by connecting a inductor (about 18 uH) and a tuning capacitor (about 30 pF) in series. I wonder how FM modulator and demodulator are implement in this rig.

Interesting about the missing LSB carrier oscillator - I had the "non G" Kenwood version of this radio, and I'm pretty sure that came with both USB and LSB as standard.

This was a Cadillac in its day man. All mode VHF was expensive. Now its much more common. Especially with all of the "shack in a box" radios..

In the TR-9130 your board (x50-1870) is populated differently, though the footprints appear to be identical. It’s labeled as the car unit PC Board. It’s a 2m All Mode.

Great little radio that looks well designed. I expressed my frustration in another comment on how stuff made in that time period made you pay more for extra features. I had a Yaesu FT 726 that required you to buy all of the un-obtainium modules just to operate in the satellite bands. None of the manufactures seemed to make anything above the 15 watt range until latter years for some reason, even though VHF marine radios were always 25 watts. You really had to be creative back in those days! That "all in one box" stuff that came out in the >2000's really spoiled people as ironically ham radio was starting to diminish in popularity.

I'm betting there's some magic going on with the biasing of the final PA between FM/CW (class C) and USB (class AB more likely) modes.

I wonder why thru-hole radios were not much more expensive, considering the complexity, lack on integration and manual labor involved. I also wonder why modern surface-mount radio are not much less expensive, considering the integration and automation.

Ha ha, any excuse to use a machine tool! I have a Unimat down in the basement and am always looking for applications for it. But I guess I never tried to use a BNC connector on my 9130!
