I've had the flipside 309 for about 4 years. I just bought a 500 aw ii. When you spend the back around supporting it with a waist strap it feels fine and it beats the heck out of having to put your bag on the ground or trying to one hand your camera and hold your bag. Something else about a flip side that I like that a lot is it's more secure as a bag when you're working in a crowd. I have had people unzip my bag before thinking it was funny. The 500 aw ii also has a rainfly tucked away in the bottom period so if it starts raining use swing the bag around like you're going to open it and pull the rain fly out and it goes up and over the top of the bag and then you just strap it back up on your shoulders and your gear is even more protected. The things I like about lowepro camera bags is the build quality, the quality of the foam that protects your gear, and usually a very well thought out layout. I need to go do an outdoor shoot here in a few days and I'll be trying out my 500 walking around with my gear. This is a great video I highly recommend and agree with everything said here. If you're thinking about a bag get a flip side it's better protected and it's more secure.

There is a detail that often, but ignorantly overlooked in this backpack (400 and 500) is that the two straps above individually are released and each other are joined as a third attachment point for the top of the tripod to prevent nod and pull the bag back.
Many people have this pack and do not realize that possibility. It happened to me. This backpack has three attachment points for the tripod.

I've had one of these for a while to hold most of my kit in storage or when I need to lug it somewhere. I'm forever impressed at how much crap I can fit in it and how comfortable it is for the load it holds. You need to be very wary around crowds though if you also have a tripod on the back. It's very easy to smash it into people... and other things. A friend of mine also has one and he's constantly bashing it into door ways and stuff.

Just bought the same. Arrived today John on your recommendation! A big old bag too! :)

Hi!
Thank you for the review. I have the 400 AW, but looking to get something bigger but not huge so I can get on the low-cost flights with the gear. I'm also a canon guy and use 70-200, 24-105, 24TS-E, 17-40 and filters (lee..) and the 100 macro. Feels like my 400 can't fit all that, so does the 500 fit?

I would probably get irritated and cut the straps off.
