Why 7x7 Is The New Square-1

Square-1 has changed a TON since I started cubing in early 2015, and now, I think the same thing is happening to 7x7. The release of the Hays 7 is parallel to the release of the Qiyi Square-1 in that it will make good hardware much more accessible for beginners, and because of that, the world records will be pushed much lower, and more people will become world class.

I completely agree with these statements, but frankly, I would say that square-1 had a much larger jump in popularity. I honestly hope more events, like clock or 6x6 or even feet, follow similar trends.

I’m loving this cubing essay style content - very much like mine! While I definitely think your points have some merit, the square-1 jump was much larger. If we’re talking really long term, the best examples would probably be 4x4 and 6x6.

I got my first 7x7 for christmas... and it's Hays7. And it's enjoyable and it's one of my favourite events. I absolutely agree with you. It's fast and fluid.

2018 looks like a good year for big cubes in general
In 6x6 there is is Aoshi GTS (which dropped my average by at least 10-20 seconds, broke a stagnation I hit with WeishiGTS/Yuxin red, and is basically the best cube in my collection, at least until I get AoFuGTS/Hays7/Spark) and Shadow (which some other people also like), Definitely a visible drop, but not as big as 7x7.
In 8x8 and 9x9 there is Cubing classroom, which made everything much smaller, and a lot more stable with the triple center mechanism. (Only flaw is the 1-2 piece pops, which is still better than the deforming lockups of the cubes before them) Many UWRs are set, and my own averages dropped by a minute for both of these. (but it's non WCA, so maybe not as much attention are on these)
And I haven't tried the Aochuang GTS yet, but the mech itself looks promising.
