In Dark Sun, even when not much changed mechanically, the classic Classes were changed on a fundamental level. The Fighter, one of two classes that had the least outright mechanical changes(the other being the Thief), is a great example of this, because what changed was the nature of fundamental, defining feature of every Fighter in D&D: weapons and armor.

Actually, the true weapon master in DarkSun was the gladiator. The fighter had less specialized weapons, but he had more defensive equipment and, more importantly, he was the only class with knowledge of strategy, experience in battlefield management, and able to operate siege engines.
Gladiators were better at fighting and dueling, but fighters were the strategists, generals and commanders. Quite different from the standard AD&D rules.
