What happened to Brendon Hartley in Formula 1?

Often described as one of the unluckiest F1 drivers of all time, Brendon Hartley's F1 career only lasted a little over a year. I have been harsh on this guy before, during and after his F1 tenure...but was it warranted? In this video, I aim to find out...

Brendon was unlucky. Not even a question. Despite the fact he had been waiting for a seat for basically SIX years I thought he still showed fantastic talent. And he justifies that every race in WEC.

I'd imagine it was a bit difficult for Hartley to improve his racecraft and race pace when a third of the races he'd have mechanical failures or be on the butt end of someone else's crash

I remember going to the Renault World Series in 2009 and singling out Hartley for an autograph and a photo because I knew he was the Toro Rosso reserve and figured that meant he was destined for F1. Needless to say, I spent a few years thinking I'd bet on the wrong horse. Then he won Le Mans and I thought "Okay, I bet on the right horse in the wrong race". Then 2017 came around...

The only Hartley moment I remember isn't exactly even to do with him. It's when Crofty said 'Brendon Hartley doubles his points total....to 2'.

When Josh is talking about Hartley's junior career back in 2007 and 2008 yet he only made it to F1 in 2017, you know something went wrong somewhere 😂

This must have been pain for Josh to make.

I've thought a bout that a lot of times and here's my take on Hartley: He is an insanely talanted driver. Just the fact that he managed to win a Le Mans 24 puts him in a category of his own. Perhaps a contraversial opinion but I do think that endurance races are a lot more demanding than F1 and by a large margin for several reasons: One is purely the amount of time you spend at 300+ km/h and LMP1(the category in which Hartley compeated) is not that far off in terms of speed compared to an F1 car. On top of that you share the same track with cars which are considerably slower than you. Yes, he drove for Porsche which historically has has conquered the endurance racing world in pretty much all categories but let's not forget that it was Porsche who picked Hartley along with names such as Bernhard, Webber and Hulkenberg. Hartley's problem in F1 was Red Bull/Torro Roso. Both teams have the same issue: They have a number one driver and another driver, meaning they give 100% of their effort to work with their number one, whereas the other is in a "stand there and sit pretty" position. I'm willing to bet he would have done much better in any other team.

I don't give a shit what anyone says, dude is a Grade-A sports car God. He won Le Mans and Petit Le Mans in the same year. Frankly this dude should have taken up the Indycar drive with CGR with Scott Dixon. Woulda been a pretty sick KIWI INVASION

Deserved another year in F1 … he just needed more time to adapt from WEC to F1.

A Kiwi doesn't win Le Mans accidentally.
Well, maybe Bruce McLaren.

The real gift from New Zealand to the racing world is Scott Dixon, one of the best IndyCar drivers of all time

Before i watch the video I say that I always remember him for how unlucky he was. Not only with his accidents in 2018 but also the seat he missed in 2009-2012.

Surprised you didn't speak about Hartley's 2018 Ganassi Indycar contract. Red Bull actually bought out Hartley's Indy contract, for a rumoured hefty sum, in order to put him in the seat.
Feel like that's important information and perhaps related Red Bull's mindset, feeling that Hartley owed them something more.

Have you changed mic setup? Feels like a pop filter or de-esser would help a little. Hope this doesn’t come across as critical it was just something I noticed. Great video as always :)

The most likable part of him was that he sent a video message to the Honda Thanks Day 2018 event despite already being out of Toro Rosso-Honda. I wish he had more chance in F1, but at least he has the best WEC seat for now.

I really felt sorry for him over the run of races around Monaco and Canada. So unlucky with them.
