How To Read Crochet Diagrams?

The art of reading a crochet diagram is a method I prefer over reading written words. For myself, my first crochet book when I was 14 had written words but also diagrams for each pattern.

Reading isn't my strong suit and it's still not today. Look at my grammar and you can see I am not kidding.

I learned crochet through reading the diagrams as I came to understand what the symbols meant. Using a stitch key, I taught myself pretty quickly.

The video below is a comprehensive look at learning how to read crochet diagrams. I start back at the very beginning and work towards getting more complicated. Everything from how to read them, symbols, and so much more. The video has 15 segments. I provide the minute marker near the beginning of the tutorial so you can fast forward if you want to see particular elements and learn specific information. #crochet #learntocrochet #crochettutorial .

This video is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The captioning is also available in multiple languages such as Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. The written pattern is only available in English. . *** .

I love my patterns in written words, but I do want to know how to do diagrams. While watching this video I really prefer written patterns. This is too much to remember.

Thanks for the video, I learned a lot. I listened to it in Spanish cause I had just seen your post about new dubbing option. I was able to follow perfectly, found no translation mistakes and the voice of the person is clear. Personally, I have no problem understanding English but I do congratulate you for adding this option for the Spanish speakers. I hope the word gets out about this, so they can also follow you and enjoy your crochet teachings. 👏

Thank you! I was given a huge stack of Magic Crochet magazines and want to use the charts and have been overwhelmed looking at them.

I've learned to love those diagrams. Sometimes I find the written instructions confusing and refer to the diagram which helps clarify the pattern. My first experience with a diagram was many years ago when I made my mother a shawl from a Japanese pattern book. Once I got started and figured out the stitches, I found it very easy to follow.

Thank you for doing this video. I’ve crocheted for 30 years, but never knew how to read charts and was terrified of them. I feel much more confident about giving it a try after watching this intensely informative video. ❤

Mikey! Thank you so much for this video. I have crocheted for about 50 years. But I have never used a diagram. I easily understand the written patterns. But I just bought a crochet stitch "dictionary" book that has only diagrams. The diagrams intimidate me SO much. They make no sense to me. Your tutorial is very helpful. I hope I can read the diagrams by the end of your tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to do this step-by-step.

I love diagrams but have no confidence in drawing them myself, so I write row instructions. Not for the dyslexic or faint of heart. 😮Thus video is fantastic for building my courage. As always, Mikey, I just love your content and thank you. 🥰🙏

Esto está muy bueno! Tengo tu edad y cuando aprendí el crochet no había internet, entonces era natural aprender a leer patrones e instrucciones. Los patrones tienen la ventaja de que puedes tenerlos contigo y discretamente continuar tejiendo en cualquier parte a diferencia de los tutoriales. Gracias!

I would love to see a video showing on a sample doing what the symbol says to do, like show the symbol for chain and then crochèt it, the symbols for the rest just crochèt it on a sample piece im a very visual learner and I don't aways understand written stuff. I know you're busy, but I just thought about this. Thank you for all the tutorials you do for us.

I was and still am for a written pattern, especially when it comes to knitting.
But there are times in crochet where I can't understand what the designer means. Having that diagram makes it easier to reflect on.
