Volvo V70 -06 D5 185HP weird motor sound

Volvo V70 -06 D5 185HP has a strange deep pumping sound. Just can't figure out what makes the noise. 270tkm behind with these horses. SOLVED!

Hey, sorry guys for the late answer. I've found the issue and it was the hydraulic valve lifters which is a common problem with this year models D5 engines (and also newer). One of the valve lifters came out in two pieces but the engine is still OK. I'm not sure if some of the valve lifter quality is bad or is it because of the long life engine oils.

Actually the repair is not expensive because you don't have to open the whole engine and replace the engine sealing. One of the key issues to avoid this defect is to keep your engine oil in good shape. For instance one year I drove 32 thousand km which I think caused the problem. In time, a little bit of diesel mixes in with the engine oil which decreases the lubricant ability of the oil. That's why you should be a little skeptical with the Long Life Oils.

Same for my 2007 D5 30 000 km, worn valve lifters. Changed the swirl flaps at the same time since the cover was off.

Hi, first of all still driving with the same car at 375tkm so 100tkm after this problem. The ticking sound does not relate to hydraulic valve lifter problem but It could be related to rocker arms which needs to be replaced. In that case you need to open the seal. if you read the comments of this video, no seal were not needed to be opened or replace with valve lifter problem. Injector fuel lines were removed but not replaced. I gave the job to a one company whose workers had previously worked at Volvo service.

Yep definitely worn valve lifters, I should know because my 2006 D5 s60 (185) makes the same noise, albeit not as loud as this one. Worn lifters on these usually make that sound. They are usually quiet when the engine is cold and get more ‘tappy’ when the engine reaches operating temperature
Lots of people say this model year had a bad batch of lifters but I personally think the problem was more in depth than that.
2005-2006 is when the D5 went to a 0w30 oil and 18000mile service interval, originally they came with a 5w30/5w40 a3/b4 spec oil (Euro 3) and 12000mile intervals between services
I think the problem mainly was the long service intervals, that and also the fact that the euro4 engines had a habit of diluting the engine oil in the sump with diesel thanks to dpf regenerations.
Add all this together and it’s quite obvious that the lifters became the weak link in the chain of the bulletproof D5 engine. Engines affected by this are usually on higher mileage (150k+miles). Euro 3 engines never suffered the same fate unless badly neglected!
I plan to change all my lifters and rocker arms when the timing belt is due, and get it all done in one relatively expensive job

Hydraulic valve lifters are common problem on these engines, and you get that sound...

Mine (2002 D5244T) ticks and pulses the exactly the same way but not as obvious I was told that this isn't gonna cause any issues for hundreds of thousands of kilometers so I'll keep on changing the oil every 9000 kilometers.

Mine is ticking like that but runs just fine :) 540000km on it now and runs like a champ, and its a polestar so its pretty quick too :)

I have a 15 month old XC60. I bought it from a main dealer on Volvo Selekt and it sounds like a London Taxi. Terribly loud at tick over and lowing revs, gets better as I have some speed to take away the noise. Should they fix this under warranty?

Hi Shiny MineI have a similar aged V70 D5 that makes a slight ticking noise only when warm, does this sound similar to what you experienced? Also did you do the work yourself and if so did you replace the injector fule lines and rocker cover seal? My car drives well and sounds 90% ok but I am aware a lifter left to break up could ruin camshafts and a fair bit of other stuff.
