Bambu Lab H2D 3D Printer Review: Laser Cutter?!

It's finally here. We've been testing Bambu Lab's new flagship H2D 3D printer, a massive machine that can print full-sized helmets and is equipped with dual extruders. We run through its new features, how it performs, and some surprising results. Plus, how the H2D can also operate as a vinyl cutter and laser cutter in the same build area!

Creator of the Caesar knife block here. It’s surreal to see my print just chilling on the table next to the printer in this video

The Julius Caesar knife block is exceptional

Been using this for a couple weeks and blown away how the “it just works” mantra of Bambu’s other stuff continues to ring true. I could teach my 85-year-old grandma how to laser-engrave something from start to finish in 10 minutes.

Who remembers the print of the week time lapse on this channel? Oh how far 3D printers have come.

I appreciate having a review that doesn't just gloss over the recent controversy, ty for being transparent to your viewers!

The biggest drawback of Bambu Lab printers are the lack of functionality available when the printer are in LAN mode and lack of a rj45 port. I don't want to use cloud services and I don't like the idea of not having the control of my own data.

I agree with your "snakes with legs" analogy.
Bambu jumped so far ahead of the competition. This was, in a lot of ways, a step backwards. We've seen dual nozzles that rock on the Ultimakers 2. We've seen laser attachments and CNC on snapmakers and others. Did they do a good job incorporating these into their design? Sure. But who wants this? Snake with legs.
I use laser cutting, and one thing about it is you need it to be big. Like 4x bigger than 3D printing. Fortunately it doesn't need to be tall. But mixing additive and subtratative manufacturing in one machine is a bit like... well, I don't know if the kids remember combo VHS/DVD players. In the end they were just 2 devices in the same casing, with the added downside of if one breaks you lose both. That's what it feels like to slap a laser head on a 3D printer.
I can't say I'm excited about this.

The "Legs on a snake" analogy is spot on.

This was good. I think the community would love a deep dive into TPU printed with various different materials at the same time in a over molding situation

Just a note about the laser safety glasses - Bambu specifies they cover 200 to 450nm wavelengths at OD5+ (less than 1/100, 000 of optical power at that wavelength is transmitted). But their laser operates at 455 nm, which is outside the rated filter window. There's probably some filter roll-off that blocks a good portion of the laser light that close to the stop band, but they still didn't pick the right glasses to bundle with the laser. For a blue laser they should be orange glasses which are usually rated from 190 to 540nm, and avoid being on the very edge (or outside) of the filter window. Same goes for the green panels.

I really don't understand why they've included a laser cutter. For the price difference between the base H2D and the laser module, you can buy a laser cutter with much more cutting area. As a bonus, you then don't need to worry about all the fumes from lasering gumming up your 3D printer

I love how much this dude had printed by this printer to show off. Every other video I've seen is 3 items that shows off 1 aspect of the printer. This really helps you to understand what it can do.

would love to see some long term testing on any potential impact on print quality due to fumes and debris from the laser cutter, as well as a direct comparison to the prusa xl

This explanation of color swapping sold me. Genius

Thank you Norm. Especially, your info on the conflict with policy changes. Enjoyed the review.

Gotta admit, as someone who post-processes his models anyway for printing, to me the main advantage of an MMU has always been that I could print light pipes and similar things. There's also conductive filament, but with the price and the resistance it's still better to just model channels to pull wires through.
Another advantage of this dual setup could also be to designate rolls 2-4 to use up old filament remnants for use as infill. Not sure if that's already possible in the slicer (to only use roll 1 for infill if the others are all empty), but I''m sure you can see the point.

Looks like a fantastic machine and this review helped me decide that it is a little too fantastic for me. I remain thrilled with my X1C and A1 Mini. Bambu is still the best!

I have seen 5-ish reviews so far, but I gotta see yours because you are a real engineer and engineers see machines differently.
