I have a tinfoil hat theory. So, I think the reason behind how Viktor sent Jayce back to the present is because of Ekko showing him how when he threw the capsule at him. The two then work together to take hextech out forever. Coincidentally, we see what could have been had hextech never been invented. My theory is that they went back in time, and never invented hextech to begin with (to stop others from making their mistake). Result was the branching universe where ep 7 happened. So, retroactively ep 7 becomes the true canon, and a genuinely happy ending to their story. Viktor even confirms this by saying he has done this infinite number of times, by giving Jayce the rune so that through their mistakes they learn the lesson of ep9. I think everytime that happened, an alternate universe was created where hextech didn't exist.
