Pileated Woodpecker Call

It's amazing how tropical this bird sounds.

All my life I heard this call a LOT up north (Wisconsin) but I'd never seen the bird that made the call until last weekend when I walked up on one of these guys terrorizing some anthills. Such stunning animals, the way they hop around on the ground is quite endearing.

I hear them all the time where I live but I see them so rarely, like 1 - 2 times a year. They are very good at staying hidden.

The best way to describe their call is a "softcore kookaburra" lol

Was walking on the bay and saw one hanging around. Normally they zip out of sight the moment you catch glance, but this stayed jumping from tree to tree. The second I heard its call I was amazed at how many times I've actually heard the creatures. Like a previous comment stated, they're very good at staying hidden from view.
