Another positive is when your mortgage is paid off, you can live a very comfortable life on a very small amount of annual income. I know when I tell people what I live on, they assume I am living in extreme poverty. Yet I live a middle-class life.

44 year old married engineer with two boys. My wife (pharmacist) and I paid off our mortgage a few years ago and without a doubt it's a great feeling to know that you own what is covering your head. We max out our retirement savings accounts and currently invest in rental properties in Las Vegas - our future home state. Somebody else pays our mortgage for us. At any point, we can pull the plug on the rental units and consolidate our assets knowing that we only owe property taxes and insurance. A nice feeling indeed.

We also live in the bay area and paid off the mortgage 3 years ago. The feeling of freedom is amazing. Dave Ramsey said the grass feels different on a paid home. It’s true!! Never have to worry about company re-org or layoffs because our monthly obligations are minimal.

Nothing is feels as good as being completely debt free. I paid my house off as well despite all the advice not too -- and would do it over an over again. The peace of mind and freedom it gives you is worth the opportunity cost.
