Dugong, officially declared as extinct in China

The fragile cetacean known as the dugong has been declared extinct in China.

The dugong is the only strictly herbivorous marine mammal and has been classified as Grade 1 National Key Protected Animal since 1988 by China's state council.

Dugongs and manatees are considered as “Sirenians”, not “Cetaceans”, which include whales and dolphins. They are not whales at all.
