Call of Cthulhu: insanity is the only path for truth

The E3 trailer for Call of Cthulhu, the official video game adaptation of Chaosium’s pen & paper RPG, rises from the depths. Developed for consoles and PC by Cyanide Studio in Paris, Call of Cthulhu will offer an RPG-Investigation title, packed with psychological horror and stealth mechanics. Cyanide Studios brings to life a disturbing world that players will have to explore and investigate while Cthulhu, the Great Dreamer, prepares its awakening. Today’s E3 Trailer offers but a glimpse at all that awaits you.

In Call of Cthulhu, players will control Edward Pierce, a former veteran and private investigator in 1920s Boston. Pierce will be investigating the tragic and mysterious death of Sarah Hawkins and her family in Darkwater Island. The game’s E3 Trailer showcases this disturbing Island and the eerie Hawkins Family Mansion, and gives a glimpse at how the intensity of the investigation will slowly start chipping away at your Sanity.

Insanity and the Cthulhu Mythos have long been entwined – as your investigation brings you closer to Cthulhu’s sphere of influence, madness will progressively engulf your senses, leaving you to increasingly question what is real and what is illusory. They say that madness is the only way that can bring you to the truth and you will have to balance your sanity against your determination to discover it!

The Cthulhu Mythos has grown to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned, giving birth to countless stories, novels, and even movies ever since the original publication of Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu.

Call of Cthulhu will release in 2017 on consoles and PC

If they want to make this game proper, they have to make it impossible for the player to "win". There is no fighting a final boss, but rather surviving an unimaginable presence. The thought of seeing the next day should be enough to count as a "win", as minimal as that may be. Because humanity is nothing but an ant to be stepped on when compared to the Great Old Ones, and there's no changing that.

For anyone who's curious, here's the whole press release that came with this trailer, talks some about the game itself:

If this is even half as good as Dark Corners of the Earth, I'll be balls deep in it.

I really hope gameplaywise it will be a proper "Dark Corners of the Earth" sequel :P
Still, you guys never disappoint, so whatever it will be, I'm sure you'll nail the Call of Cthulhu atmosphere :-)

I hope to fucking god that Cthulhu isn't something that you can kill, outwit, or even survive. If it's like a Lovecraft themed shooter, it undermines the whole idea of cosmic horror.

Finally a new Lovecraf game! Dark Corners of the Earth was so amazing on Xbox back then.

As long as you don't make Cthulhu an end game boss (or have any physical presence at all really), I'm all for it.

The protagonist looks a lot like an older Sebastian Castellanos from Evil Within wearing his early game trenchcoat.

Dear Focus Home Interactive, first you managed to make a Cold War RTT series which basically has all many armchair generals and veterans ever expected from an strategy game(Wargame), then you made a small but valiant revival of the RTS genre with new IPs (Etherium and Act of Aggression) and this year you have brought back some of Games Workshop classics without selling out to try to catch the MOBA audience or Blizzard's playerbase (Battlefleet Gothic: Armada and Space Hulk: Deathwing), and now, after so many years, you are bringing back the Cthulhu's Mythos, no aliases or ersatz, the real thing which filled my youth's dreams with tales of eldritch alien gods, ancient pre-human civilizations and strange and terrifying adventures where man dared to stand his ground in a careless and unforgiving universe, and of course that's just my personal selection, because others got their own favorites and beloved ones.

Where great companies monopolized and dried out these wonderful things, vainly forcing them to become mainstream, you dared to create new licenses while trying to stay true to the classics, where we game minorities were shoved off and considered irrelevant by large publishers because we were niche customers you took care of us, gave us free DLCs, and tried to stay close to us and patch your games even if things didn't always go as we all wish it would have been.

I love you guys, the publisher and the studios, Tindalos Interactive, Eugen Systems, Cyanide and others under your wing, you have been working to make all these wonderful videogames, praise you all.

As long as they don't fuck up the concept of Cthulhu we should be fine :)
