The Story of Ming Lan was my very first cdrama. I remember seeing a comment that said Ming Lan was still about the upper class but more of the home life and the day to day. Yes, royalty and nobility was still there, but it was more about Ming Lan growing up as a (albeit rich) scholar’s daughter and her outsmarting everyone.

Rebel princess should be no.1, it was the first cdrama I watched and rewatched. I laughed, cried, cheered, and booed. So good. The male lead is a manly man, not looking like a girl or acting like one either.

I think that in this list are missing two of the most wonderful Chinese historical drama. Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace” and The King’s Woman” When we talk about best Chinese Historical Dramas these cannot be ignored.

The Rebel Princess (outstanding), Princess WeiYoung, The King's Woman, Love Like the Galaxy (I thought Zhao LuSi was at her best in this drama), Eternal Love, Story of YanXi Palace, The Story of Ming Lan, Empress of China, Nirvana In Fire. All were excellent or very good. I haven't watched them all, though.

Half of these are COSTUME dramas, NOT historical. And there are wayyy better historical dramas than the ones listed. I strongly recommend "Empresses in the Palace", NOTHING beats it.

Nirvana in Fire is best!! Number 2 is Joy of Life! Incredible story even if it’s fantasy. I wouldn’t add Untamed and Eternal Love in this list because it’s too fantasy stories.

Don't forget the Chinese historical and period dramas made in Taiwan Area by CTS, CTV and TTV in the Seventies, Eighties and
Nineties, like "Judge Bao" (both the 1974 original and the 1993 remake), "The Empress of the Dynasty" (1985), "The Princess of the Dynasty" (1986), "The Legend of Emperor Qianlong" (1991), "Plum Blossom Trilogy" (1993) and "Chinese Legendary Story" (1982).
