North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has signed off a defense pact with Russia, just 2 days after Russian President Vladimir Putin did so.
Our Lee Eun-hee has the details.
North Korea has officially ratified its comprehensive strategic partnership treaty with Russia.
According to the regime's Korean Central News Agency, the treaty was approved by a formal decree or a formal order from its leader Kim Jong-un on Monday.
The agreement, which was signed following a summit in Pyongyang in June, states that both countries will provide military assistance if either is attacked.
Putin, who described the treaty as "nothing new," comparing it to a previous Soviet-era agreement that has since expired, also signed the law ratifying the treaty, which was officially published on Saturday.
The treaty will take effect once North Korea and Russia exchange ratification documents.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukrainian soldiers are holding off around 50-thousand Russian troops in the Kursk region of Russia.
This comes amid reports that over 10-thousand North Korean soldiers have been deployed to Russia, with some small-scale clashes already reported.
In August, Kyiv launched a surprise attack into Russia's Kursk region, stating that it was necessary because Russia was planning a new offensive from there.
The goal was to create a "buffer zone" to prevent future cross-border attacks.
However Russian forces have since regained about half of the territory that was initially lost.
Over the course of the three months of fighting in Kursk, Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief says that nearly 8-thousand Russian soldiers have been killed and over 12-thousand injured.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, North Korea has become one of its most important supporters, further deepening their relationship.
