What we know about ADHD and Genetics
Genes that Barkley Showed but it is not clear on the slide since we barely see it.
DRD4 specific gene variants, dopamine receptor
DRD2 specific gene variants, dopamine receptor
DAT1 specific gene variants, dopamine reuptake transporter
DBH specific gene variants, enzyme that is involved in the processing of monoamines neurotransmitters
MAO-A specific gene variants, enzyme that plays a role of clean up and maintenance of monoamines neurotransmitters
LPHN3 (latrophillin gene) Gene that is connected to the G-Protein Receptors, critical part of signal transduction.

Barkley goes in more detail on his website here in this lecture

Note these are not all the genes that are connected to ADHD and are known, just some of them.

Please check my genes! I've been diagnosed but have not responded to drugs very well - they do very little for me. In fact it's hard to tell I've taken anything. No one around here knows how to treat this very well, and the clinics have closed so now what.... I volunteer to have my genes checked out. I could be your ADHD poster boy, diagnosed severe ADHD late in life. Will drive to where-ever, desperate for solutions.

I have multiple mutations on DRD4. I did 30x whole genome sequencing. One SNP in particular that I have has an allele frequency of like 0.03%. So fascinating!

That was the most concise yet clear explanation of the dopamine, transporters and reuptake inhibitors!!! Thank you doctor! I'm watching the whole playlist and it's so reassuring and eye-opening ❤

In the UK, it has taken me 6 years to receive any kind of help or support.
Just pills.
That's all I've had.
Not one person, professional or otherwise has sat with me and helped me help myself.
Medication did help for a while but I keep developing resistance to higher doses and want off but I haven't had any tangible problems addressed

So 8 years later, where are we on this? This video sounds promising until you realise it happened 8 years ago.

It's 2018. I'm 33 never been diagnosed definitely have ADD inattentive. So that means I know I should make an appointment but I get side tracked and never do. And one blue moon I might and if they give me a crappy drug that doesn't work . That is extremely discouraging. I will hyper focus on that along with the amount of work it takes me to get and go to an appointment, wonder if I'm a guinea pig, start to question if people think I'm lying, what I could do to prove I'm not a liar, maybe I don't have ADD, is it something else? Am I fine? I don't need to go to the doctor. Next thing you know, yet another year went by ...

They really should have someone at the camera to move it around so we can see what he's drawing.

I wish people allowed the editing of closed captions, again. Most people who post videos don't have the time to write them, and the people who do no longer can@

Anyone have any idea if this gene measuring system for appropriate drug therapy for each individual is available?

I know this video's old, but not being able to see the presentation slides while Dr. Barkley explains images on them still kinda sucks

This Dr sounds like he knows what he's talking about and the research statistics are compelling, however, I'm not entirely sure that drugs is the answer. Gabor Mate has another theory, that it is not genetic but a developmental effect, which can be reversed or managed. I'm trying to understand this condition more and find answers and strategies of coping better, without drugs. Anyone else have their theories or views on this?
