Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world. The durability of concrete may be described as “the ability of concrete to resist weathering action, chemical attack, and abrasion while maintaining its desired engineering properties” (PCA). The durability of concrete is influenced by a number of factors including design, materials, mixture, placement and exposure. This Webinar will discuss the role of aggregate selection and quality, with particular focus on the chemical reactions, alkali aggregate reactions and pyrrhotite oxidation. The presenter will discuss the existing test methods and guidance documents for evaluating aggregate sources, and the challenges involved. We will also discuss recommendations for testing, monitoring, and documentation.
