Longterm Storytelling at it's finest, you had the Mega Powers then both fight over the title, a lot of it wrote itself and makes the difference as a fan.

the mega powers they were the same yet they were so different at the same time both were so colorful and intense as hell and both and the obsession for the gold and the story just writing itself with having Elizabeth in the middle was just epic

Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage back in the 80s was one of the best wrestling rivalry feud stories ever written. It was kind of shocking to watch as a kid, because they were not the bad guys.

It was great storytelling ABSOLUTELY!!! But in Hogan you had arguably the biggest box office star of ALL TIME vs. arguably the best TOTAL PACKAGE of all time (technical skills, aerial assault, great as face or heel, great mic skills, true main event IT factor/charisma) in Macho. And you had also the big guy in Hogan vs. the 235-240 pound Savage. It was a big man vs. smaller heavyweight dynamic as well. Hogan vs. Piper had a similar dynamic with the size difference and crazy star power. BUT Savage was more well rounded across the board than Piper. PLUS we never got Hogan vs. Piper one on one on that PPV stage.

That's why The Megapowers was the ULTIMATE Two Man Power Trip combination! Then when they broke up and starting feuding on the huge WWF stage it had NO CHOICE but to be epic! No doubt the feud stands the test of time. Hogan was the BLUEPRINT for the pop culture icon who transcended wrestler. Austin and Rock came after that and are of course are from that cloth. While Mach was the BLUEPRINT for the great total package guys like HBK, Jericho, Eddie, Angle, Punk, Daniel Bryan, Rollins, Cody, etc.

All these guys had their own style don't get me wrong. BUT Savage was THE FIRST to put together the technical skills, aerial assault, great as face or heel, great mic skills, and true main event IT factor/charisma type of pacakge on a huge national-worldwide platform! Cody is RULING THE WORLD with this type of package. Rollins had a great run with this type of package. But Mach was THE GUY to truly put that type of superstar on the map in the 80's!!

Randy was so compelling that even if you knew him to be wrong about the feud you wanted him to be right.

This Rivalry has been etched into my brain to this day. It's funny that this video should come up because last night I was thinking about this rivalry and how people were divided between Hogan and Savage- Who was right and who was wrong? But I finally realized that when the Mega Powers exploded Hogan was the true villain of the story, because Savage was the champion and he had the girl (who we would find out later was his wife) But Hogan had made the team all about himself instead sharing the spotlight with WWE Champion Randy Savage, then to make matters worse he was getting a little too handsy with Elizabeth, Savage had every right to be pissed off. But of course the WWE and Hogan would twist the story to make Savage look like the bad guy, Jesse Ventura was right in calling out Hogan as he would call him "The Luster" But then again Savage was no Saint either as he would make Hogan's life miserable and eventually dump Elizabeth for Sharri Martel. That to me is great storytelling when you have to ask, "Who is the true villain of this story? This has to be my favorite WWE Rivalry of all time.

Utter the words "lust in your eyes" to a true wrestling fan and they immediately know what you are talking about. More than 30 years later, and they will STILL know... immediately. It wasn't an "Ooh yeah" or a "Whatcha gonna do" or a "Whoo." It wasn't a catchphrase that stuck because it was repeated over and over again. It stuck because it viscerally captured something authentic. This storyline is the WWF's best told storyline.

That Randy and Elizabeth aren't here to tell their stories is depressing. We are more years away from Elizabeth passing than Elizabeth was from WM 5 at the time of her death. She and Randy probably didn't have enough distance and perspective to realize how meaningful their contributions to wrestling and pop culture were. It's sad that we never had a chance to offer our thank yous and say our goodbyes.
