Discover the incredible story of the USS Bernadou (DD-153), a remarkable Wickes-class destroyer that played a pivotal role in the United States Navy during World War II. Named in honor of Commander John Bernadou, this vessel has a rich history.

Launched on November 7, 1918, in Philadelphia and sponsored by Miss Cora Winslow Bernadou, the ship was commissioned on May 19, 1919. Learn about her early missions, patrolling the East Coast, and her decommissioning in July 1922.

Returning to service in May 1930, Bernadou joined Squadron 7, Scouting Force. Discover her contributions during the Neutrality Patrol after being recommissioned in October 1939.

Explore her vital role in escorting convoys during World War II, including transporting Marines to Iceland and participating in the invasion of North Africa, which earned her a prestigious Presidential Unit Citation. She continued escort and patrol duties, taking part in significant campaigns such as the Sicily landings, Salerno landings, and Mediterranean convoys.

In December 1943, Bernadou returned to the United States and continued escort duties along the East Coast and in the Caribbean until May 1945. She was decommissioned on July 17, 1945, and later sold for scrap on November 30, 1945.
