Jewish Power: Myths and Realities of American Jewish Political Influence with J.J. Goldberg

Writer, lecturer, and journalist J.J. Goldberg speaks about “the myths and realities of Jewish political influence.” His book on the subject, Jewish Power: Inside the American Jewish Establishment, was released in 1996. Goldberg argues that, despite the commonly repeated idea that “Jews no longer have any power in this country,” the American Jewish community remains “a power to be reckoned with.” He contends that an active fight against antisemitism following the World War II had a tangible effect on the social and political position of the Jewish community in America and that, at the end of the 20th century, American Jews “don't know how to look at where we are in the world.” Goldberg concludes that “the biggest problem we have is not solving any particular problem, it's getting by” and “it's appreciating what we've got.” The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.

Recorded Dec 8, 1998 at 92nd Street Y, New York.
