Yes, it is normal to have to restart after installing certain updates. You'll probably have quite a few updates, there are a lot after SP1.

Use the download that is appropriate for your system. If you are running a 32-bit system, download the 32-bit version, if you are running a 64-bit version, download and install the 64-bit version. If you are not sure what version you are running, go to start menu, right-click on Computer and click properties. This will tell you what version you are running (under System Type). I hope this helped you.

disable your antivirus during install worked for me

The first (.iso) is a dvd image that contains updates for all architectures. The x86FRE.Symbols.msi is a standalone debugging symbol (free) for 32-bit machines. The x86CHK.Symbols.msi is standalone debugging symbols (checked) for 32-bit machines. The next two are the same except they are for 64-bit machines and include Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. You want the executable file. Select the correct version for your operating system (x86 or 64-bit). I hope I didn't confuse you worse.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you are running Vista you need to install the service packs for Vista, not 7. You want the .exe download.

If you tried to install it manually and it won't let you, it's possible you have a virus or a corrupted file somewhere. I would try it again, if it doesn't work, maybe think about backing up and reinstalling Vista.

I'm not sure what he is talking about with the 10 downloads. Unless he means there are going to be more updates after you install the service pack, which is true, there will be quite a few updates after the service pack is installed.

It probably either wouldn't let you install it or install the new installation over the old.

No you don't have to download every file on that page. Just download the appropriate file for your system (e.g. x64 or x86).
