Part 1 of a series following the fortunes of West Ham United under Harry Redknapp.

A summer of turmoil at Upton Park – not just with the demolition of the old North Bank. Billy Bonds’ 27-year association with the club ends. Assistant Manager Redknapp is considering a move back to Bournemouth but the West Ham board see him as the future and suggest to Bonds that he takes a paid directorship and moves upstairs allowing Harry to take full charge of the first team. Instead of Redknapp accepting what he purports to be his dream job in Bournemouth, or simply refusing to take charge at the expense of his “Best Friend” he allows Bonds to resign then takes the West Ham job anyway, muttering nonsense about trying to persuade Bonds to change his mind. Beware the Ides of August. More controversy as Joey Beauchamp, signed from Oxford for £1m feels the move is not for him after all and wants out. On the eve of the new season he’s swapped with defender Adrian Whitbread and joins other new signings John Moncur and Don Hutchison, with Toney Cottee returning from Everton a few weeks later. On the pitch, The Hammers cannot score. Indeed, just one goal from open play in the opening seven league games and only an own goal to show in the League Cup means the Redknapp will need to show more of his famous wheeling a dealing if the Hammers are to survive in a league where four will be relegated.

As the years tick by, I remember more of the good than the bad. And then I get reminded that we've often teetered on the edge of Basket Case Canyon. It's great to see all of this in one place. Thank you for your work. COYI.

The greatest and most loyal servant West Ham ever had, Billy Bonds. So sad to hear he is unwell. Get well soon Billy, much love from us all.

Great to see this excellent series back. Some painful memories though, like going over the Bobby Moore upper to watch the beamback from Maine Road and Walsall away. A load of us got a minibus up there, rained all day and the goal we did manage was a comical own goal, things can only get better.

RIP Joey Beauchamp. Such a shame. Great player for Oxford United. Like it was said, depression wasn't dealt with at all back then.

Good to see you back Rob.

I always direct people to the KUMB podcast if they are unsure of the relationship between Bagpuss and Bonds. I've always been on Bonds' side in this, shame it ended like it did.

I was at the pre-season 3-3 with St Albans as its my hometown club. Was brilliant to see some of the regulars at Clarence Park.

Harry redknapp the most bent man in all of sport. During his time at West ham he bought and sold 149 footballers. Are you the guy that wrote an irrational hatred of luton
