Basically, the heat from the hot glass gently warms the trapped air, which helps to gently soften the butter without melting it. I'm not a scientist, but that's how it works ;)

Thank you Chef for this quick tip for softening butter. So clever. I enjoy your cooking style and your tutorials in explaining the various steps to prepare rhe food. Now that I am semi -retired, I am enjoying learning some of your recipes. Four or five years ago, I was nursing my husband full time at home. He was terminally ill. A very brave man. I'm a nurse and I am such a baby when I think about his bravery. He needed things cold from chewing on chipped ice to eating or drinking cold things. You made a one dish ice cream that didn't require any machines. That recipe was a snap, and was prepared in no time. I made it for him and he loved it and raved about it. I experimented with various flavors. I thank you for that recipe, and the comfort and pleasure he received. I heard tonight as I copied your omelet rrecipe, that you are post surgery. I hope your in front of it all now. Remember, take it day by day. You have a new fan in the State of Florida in America. Getting in front of your surgery and are well on your way to a full recovery. Be Blessed Chef, just one day at a time.

No need to boil the water, hot water from the tap / faucet will be fine ;)

Great tip, Wish I had known about this while my Momma was still with us... That woman "rest her soul" was notorious for tearing up a slice of bread or toast with the cold butter and butter knife. lol

If the muffin is hard or stale after defrosting, try microwaving it for about 10-20 seconds and it should soften nicely ;)

I can't tell you how many times I've tried to soften my butter in the microwave & ended up with liquid. Thanks you. You have saved me a lot of frustration :)

It actually worked. I'm crying... I don't know why. It must have been all these years of experimentation... Thank you!

The longer you leave the butter under the glass, the softer it gets. If you need it softer, just give it a little more time ;)
