It is important to cut back your hardy hibiscus in the spring, if you didn't cut it down in the fall. That will allow the new growth to come through.

We have several Hardy Hibiscus in our garden in East Texas. I've gotten on my knees and trimmed them back in the past. Now at 79 years old, I mow them down to an inch or so with our lawn mower and they are doing great.

To propagate them, I push off one of the fresh shoots at 6 or 8 inches long and pot them. Sometimes it may have some small roots, but the node that attaches to the existing root system is what makes this much better faster & more successful than a cutting. I have also cross pollinated a red & an apple blossom and got a darker apple blossom. Hardy hibiscus are fun and pretty too.

Thank you so much, I been searching on how to prune them back because I'm new to this flower and your video was the only one that helped me . I'm hoping that the info is also good for Starry Starry Night . Thanks again 🙂

My hibiscus is about 8 inches now! I usually cut back the stalks in the winter then like you said cut them off right by the soil early spring. Good video!

Thank you for this! I had to relocate mine in fall 2023, and replanted a chunk, planning to divide the rest and share with friends. I forgot about them and now they're pretty dried out. I'm wondering if I waited too long. The chunk I started with, from a friend, looked like a dead piece of wood but grew beautifully the past several years.

Thank you. Finally the clear cut answer I’ve been looking for!

Any tips on butterfly bushes or limelight hydrangeas too? I’m in Michigan, should I cut those back in the spring? Someone old me to never cut back limelight’s, but I’ve read many places elsewhere that they don’t grow on old wood. Help?!

So they’ll grow 4-5 feet in one growing season after being cut almost to the ground? 😮

Is it safe to prune back the deadwood all the way to the soil? I moved into a property with a ton of hibiscus and it was never really pruned or upkept by the previous owners.

There is a ton of deadwood that seems to have prevented the number of flowering stem shoots. I can prune it back down like your video shows, but I fear it’s still way too “crowded” for full growth next season.

Hoping I can clear cut it back to the soil and have better results next year. But also don’t want to risk losing it all.

Hi, Thank you for the video. What is the best way to remove the old stems? A relative pulled the old stems from one side of my Hibiscus lats year, and this year my plants doesn't have any new growth on that side. Did she ruin my Hibiscus? Thanks

Does this apply to potted ones as well?

Thank you! I thought my hibiscus was dead after our freeze because of those old stems!

My hibiscus looks like limpy long stems, this is the second time coming back, I did not notice this last year. Will it eventually get thicker stems with nice blooms. They look like your video but growing taller like that.

Thank you very much for giving me some small tips that I needed without asking for money. I also appreciate that it's not in Spanish.🙂
